China Mobile International invests in BtoBE submarine cable, Providing low latency connectivity between Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao and San Francisco Bay Areas

8 May, 2018

May 8, 2018 – China Mobile International (CMI) has announced its latest BtoBE submarine cable investment project. A submarine cable will be built to connect the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area, San Francisco Bay Area and Singapore. The memorandum of cooperation of the project was signed by CMI and the consortium members in January this year and the construction work is expected to start in July. The BtoBE submarine cable will connect two of the most large-scale bay areas in this world, which are the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area and San Francisco Bay Area, and will further enhance the efficiency of the transmission between the major world cities in the Pacific Rim.

BtoBE submarine cable system is expected to come into operation in 2021. The system will allow transmission between the two bay areas with a total capacity of 108T, roughly the equivalent of simultaneously streaming 4.32 million ultra-high definition videos per second, with latency less than 130 milliseconds. BtoBE is the first submarine cable directly linking the United States and Singapore, with less than 150 milliseconds transmission latency between the two countries. CMI’s fiber on BtoBE will be linked to Southeast Asia-Japan 2 (SJC2) submarine cable, the latest cable invested by CMI, to further connect to Asian area. Aside from this, the BtoBE cable system will connect to CMI’s three international data centers in Hong Kong, Singapore and the United States, forming a ring among the key markets in the region by providing high speed, high quality and short latency transmission.

In respond to the increasing data service demand in APAC and the national strategy in developing Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, CMI has been committed to enhance the connectivity capabilities within and beyond the region. Both Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay area and San Francisco Bay area have large population, numerous capital sources and various international patents with great development prospects. CMI successfully completed the laying of the first cross-border optical cable on the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge in late March, opening up a new interconnection between Zhuhai and Hong Kong. The construction of BtoBE submarine cable system is another exemplification of CMI’s global network deployment strategy, to cover APAC, extend to Western, and expand to the world. Upon the operation of BtoBE submarine system, the information flow between the two bay areas will be drastically enhanced and the development of the economy, commerce and culture of the countries in the Pacific Rim will be further fostered.

CMI presently owns 138 oversea PoPs and more than 40 submarine and terrestrial cables worldwide, with total transmission bandwidth exceeding 23T. Moreover, CMI owns terrestrial systems directly accessing 8 neighboring countries of China, which builds CMI a competitive advantage with diversified cross boarder connections. In the future, CMI will continue to construct its international transmission network with broad coverage, high capacity and short latency to further reinforce the global connectivity.
